Dr. Eugene J. Sayfie was a celebrated cardiologist and internist in Miami, Florida, who practiced medicine for over 50 years. He served on the faculty of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine for more than 35 years. Dr. Sayfie was known for his patient-centered approach, making house calls and giving his personal cell phone number to patients. He was the former medical director of the Executive Health Program and an associate professor of medicine. Dr. Sayfie contributed significantly to the medical field, including being part of the team that performed the first heart and kidney transplant in the southeastern United States in 1969. He also initiated CPR courses in Miami-Dade County Public Schools as president of the American Heart Association of Greater Miami. The University of Miami honored him by opening the Eugene J. Sayfie, M.D., Pavilion for Excellence in Patient Care. He served patients at the University of Miami Hospital, University of Miami Leonard Miller School of Medicine, Mount Sinai Medical Center, and Aventura Hospital. His most recent role was as a concierge doctor of cardiology and internal medicine at Mount Sinai in Miami Beach. Dr. Sayfie passed away in May 2020 at the age of 85 due to complications related to COVID-19.
